As most first year students will note, UBC is big. Driving
through its gates reveals many amazing features. It is a school
complete with its own golf course, hospital, church, and wedding
chapel. In my first year, I was essentially on my own
in a new city.
As things began to stabilize in my first year, I settled down and
found a roomate. The ad for the suite promised cleanliness and
practicality. It was relatively cheap, and close to campus. Later, my
roomate would disclose her profession as a tantric masseuse. Suddenly,
I realized I missed home. At home, when I studied, it
was not in the knowledge of a tantric "session" in the next room.
Needless to say, first year did not go smoothly.
Now in my fourth year at UBC, I have really begun to understand some
of the downfalls of this wonderful campus. Its immensity, further
complicated by the extra responsibilities of adulthood, prevents close
personal relationships. Students become alienated.
UBCtalk.com's purpose is to assist all students in their maturation
and transition to university, adulthood and their lives beyond. Simply
put, its purpose is to make UBC smaller one post a time.
